A Celebration of Life

How To Host a Celebration of Life

When you lose a loved one, there’s no easy way to mark the occasion. Today many people are choosing a ‘celebration of life’ over the traditional funeral. Unlike a traditional funeral, a celebration of life has a much more positive celebratory feel. The focus is on commemorating a life lived, sharing memories, and letting both the tears and laughter flow. A lot of time and energy goes into planning weddings, birthdays, and other parties, but this celebration is all about honouring a person's legacy.

It’s all in the details

When planning a celebration of life, look at it from the point of view of the person you are celebrating.  Is this an event they would want to attend? Perhaps have it at by the river if they loved fly fishing, or at a beautiful venue with a view of the mountains if they loved the outdoors. Would they have enjoyed candle lighting, music, an activity, a beer tasting, an open bar? A celebration of life opens the doors to creativity and personalizing in a way that a traditional funeral cannot. It can, and should be, a true reflection of how a person lived their life.

Like other celebrations, there are some standard questions to consider. Where will the event be held? What kind of music and food will there be? Will there be flowers? What is the attire? While funerals usually have everyone in black and follow more prescriptive etiquette, the celebration of life can break the rules and include a lot more personal details.  You can even host the celebration of life on the person’s birthday.
